PAH (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons)

PAH (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons) are chemical compounds found on a large scale in oil and coal arising from the chemical conversion of natural molecules to aromatic hydrocarbons.

GS Certification

PAH testing is mandatory for GS mark certifications from April 1, 2008, according to ZEK 01-08 issued by the Central Experience Exchange Committee (ZEK)

PAHs are substances the can have the following harmful effects:

  • Likely causes of cancer in humans
  • Causes skin disorders in humans and animals
  • Causes harmful developmental and reproductive effects

PAH comes mostly from one of the following areas in the environment:

  • Wildfires and prescribed burnings
  • Primary aluminum production
  • Coooking ovens
  • Residential wood stoves
  • Burning of scrap tires
  • Open trash burning
  • On-road vehicles
  • Asphalt roofing manufacturing
  • Industrial boilers
  • Meat char broilers
